History of Indian National Flag

The need for a unifying national flag emerged during India’s freedom struggle. The first known Indian flag was hoisted in 1906 at Parsee Bagan Square in Calcutta, but it lacked universal recognition.

In 1921, Pingali Venkayya, a freedom fighter and visionary from Andhra Pradesh, presented a new design. It had red and green bands representing Hindus and Muslims. Later, Mahatma Gandhi recommended the inclusion of a white band to represent other communities and a spinning wheel (charkha) symbolising self-reliance.

The Tricolour or Tiranga Coming Alive

On 22 July 1947, a few weeks before India’s independence, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the present form of the national flag. The charkha was replaced with the Ashoka Chakra, a 24-spoke navy blue wheel derived from the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath.

Since then, 22 July has been observed as National Flag Day to honour the moment our national identity was formalised in the Tiranga.
