Kochi, still often called Cochin, is Kerala's commercial capital and one of India's oldest ports, a city layered with Portuguese, Dutch, British, Arab, Chinese and Jewish influences. It is the gateway to the backwaters and the Western Ghats, a growing IT centre, and a cruise port, drawing heritage tourists and business travellers in roughly equal measure.
