About staying in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad is Gujarat's largest city and its commercial engine, a fast-growing business hub that is also India's first UNESCO World Heritage City, thanks to the dense walled old town on the east bank of the Sabarmati. It draws business and trade travellers, heritage tourists and a steady flow of visitors for weddings and festivals.
Where you stay follows the city's split between old and new. The western side, along SG Highway and through Satellite, Bodakdev, Prahlad Nagar and Vastrapur, holds the modern business hotels, malls and restaurants. The central spine of Navrangpura, CG Road and Ashram Road is convenient and well connected. The walled Old City on the east, around Bhadra and Manek Chowk, is the heritage heart and the place for a traditional stay.
The city covers every budget. Budget hotels concentrate around the Old City, the railway station and Paldi, mid-range and business hotels fill the western corridors, and the luxury hotels sit along SG Highway and in the newer western suburbs. The airport is on the north-eastern side at Hansol, close to the city. Note that Gujarat is a dry state, so alcohol is not served.
November to February is the pleasant season, with the Uttarayan kite festival in January and Navratri in autumn drawing crowds.
