Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu and the gateway to South India, a city that blends deep Tamil heritage with a large modern economy in IT, automobiles and healthcare. It draws business travellers to its office corridors, tourists to its temples and Marina Beach, medical visitors to its well-known hospitals, and a constant flow of transit passengers heading further south.
Where you stay depends on your purpose. Egmore and George Town near Chennai Central hold the budget and heritage rooms and the railway links. T Nagar, Nungambakkam and Anna Nagar are the central shopping and business districts. The IT corridor runs south down Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) through Perungudi, Sholinganallur and Thoraipakkam, while Mylapore, Adyar and Besant Nagar offer temples, the coast and a quieter residential feel.
The city covers every budget. Budget hotels concentrate around Egmore, Central and T Nagar, mid-range business hotels fill Nungambakkam, Guindy and the OMR corridor, and the luxury hotels sit around Nungambakkam, the ECR seafront and the airport.
