About staying in Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer, the Golden City, rises out of the Thar Desert in the far west of Rajasthan, its honey-coloured sandstone fort and havelis glowing at sunrise and sunset. It is a destination built almost entirely on heritage and the desert, drawing travellers for the living fort, the carved merchant havelis and the camel safaris and camps among the sand dunes.
Jaisalmer offers heritage guesthouses around the fort and lower town, alongside desert camps at Sam and Khuri outside the city. Staying inside the living fort provides atmosphere, while properties beyond the walls may offer easier vehicle access and reduce pressure on the historic structure.
The town covers a wide range. Budget guesthouses and haveli stays fill the area below the fort, mid-range and boutique heritage hotels sit around Gandhi Chowk and towards Gadisar Lake, and the desert camps range from simple tents to luxury Swiss-style camps at Sam. Jaisalmer is remote, reached mainly by overnight train from Jodhpur and Delhi, with only limited flights.
October to March is the season, with cool days and cold desert nights, and the Jaisalmer Desert Festival in February a highlight. Summer from April to June is punishingly hot and best avoided.
