Who can book

MoU hotels are open to defence personnel. Eligibility is read from the verified service record on your udChalo account rather than from anything entered at booking time; what differs by rank is the entitlement, not the access.

Entitled room rate

Each pay level carries its own entitled base rate per night, GST exclusive, as promulgated by the Govt of India. Where a stay sits above that rate the difference is shown as a top-up before you pay.

Food charges

A daily food entitlement applies alongside the room rate and is GST inclusive. It covers breakfast and one major meal, and is invoiced as a separate line item so it can be claimed separately.

Occupancy

Pay levels 12 and above are entitled on single occupancy. At pay levels 9 to 11 a 5-star stay is entitled on double occupancy, while 4-star and 3-star stays are single occupancy.

GST and invoicing

The hotel GSTIN appears on the invoice, with room and food as separate line items and the GST rate and amount stated separately, which is what a reimbursement claim needs.

About staying in Kolkata

Kolkata, the former imperial capital and the cultural heart of eastern India, is a city of colonial architecture, literature, football and festivals, still often called the City of Joy. It draws heritage tourists, a growing business and IT trade, and huge crowds during Durga Puja, when the whole city turns into an open-air gallery.

Where you stay depends on the trip. Park Street, Esplanade and Chowringhee form the central heritage and business core, close to the Maidan, the museums and the best dining. Salt Lake and New Town to the north-east hold the IT sector and the newest hotels, and are handy for the airport. Ballygunge and Alipore are the leafy upscale south, while the areas near Howrah and Sealdah stations suit budget and transit stays.

The city covers every budget. Budget hotels cluster around New Market, Esplanade and the station areas, mid-range business hotels fill the central core and Salt Lake, and the luxury hotels sit around Park Street, Alipore and the AJC Bose Road corridor. The airport at Dum Dum is on the north-eastern side, closest to Salt Lake and New Town.

October to February is the pleasant season and by far the busiest, with Durga Puja in autumn driving demand to its yearly peak, so book well ahead around the festival.
