Entitled room rate

Each pay level carries its own entitled base rate per night, GST exclusive, as promulgated by the Govt of India. Where a stay sits above that rate the difference is shown as a top-up before you pay.

Food charges

A daily food entitlement applies alongside the room rate and is GST inclusive. It covers breakfast and one major meal, and is invoiced as a separate line item so it can be claimed separately.

Occupancy

Pay levels 12 and above are entitled on single occupancy. At pay levels 9 to 11 a 5-star stay is entitled on double occupancy, while 4-star and 3-star stays are single occupancy.

GST and invoicing

The hotel GSTIN appears on the invoice, with room and food as separate line items and the GST rate and amount stated separately, which is what a reimbursement claim needs.

About staying in Varanasi

Varanasi, also called Kashi or Banaras, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and the holiest city in Hinduism, strung along the west bank of the Ganga. Visitors come for the ghats, the evening Ganga Aarti, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the profound, unfiltered experience of a living pilgrimage city, and increasingly for the Buddhist site of Sarnath nearby.

Varanasi has guesthouses and homestays around the ghats, modern hotels in Cantonment and Sigra, and a growing range of stays elsewhere in the city. The airport is at Babatpur, outside the central riverfront zone, so transfer time should be checked for the travel date.

The city covers every budget. Budget guesthouses and homestays fill the ghat lanes, mid-range and heritage stays sit along and just back from the river, and the more modern hotels cluster in the Cantonment and Sigra. The airport at Babatpur is around 25 km north-west of the centre.

October to March is the comfortable season, with Dev Deepawali in November a spectacular highlight when the ghats are lit with lamps.
