North Goa is where the energy is, with the beach shacks, markets, nightlife and the bulk of the budget and mid-range stays, from Calangute and Candolim down to the hostels of Anjuna and Arambol. South Goa is calmer and greener, home to most of the five-star beach resorts and long, empty stretches of sand. Panjim, the capital, offers a heritage city stay in the Latin Quarter of Fontainhas, away from the beaches.

Goa now has two airports: Dabolim in the centre-south and the newer Manohar International at Mopa in the north, which has reshaped access to the northern beaches.
